Dogs love to lick. They lick themselves, they lick their humans, and they can also lick any number of things outside. 

Why Does Your Dog Lick You?

Dogs are very social and affectionate beings. They love to show their loved ones their emotions by licking. It’s the canine version of a kiss! Licking also releases endorphins in dogs. Endorphins are hormones released by the brain that reduce pain and increase the feeling of pleasure or happiness. So as your dog is licking you to show his love, he is feeling a good rush of happiness and your connection to your dog is increased.

When is Licking Not Good?
You may notice a dog that is licking in a more determined focused way. Sometimes when dogs feel stress they will lick excessively to calm themselves. It’s important to be aware of this type of focused licking because there may be a physical issue, like a thorn or cut in that specific area that needs to be attended to. Alternatively mental issues such as Anxiety can cause a dog to lick excessively. Both situations should be addressed with your veterinarian

Why Do They Lick Their Paws?

One of the most common places for a dog to lick is his paws. They lick their paws to remove dirt or any other irritant that they may have stepped on. It’s always a good practice to check your dog’s paws after a walk to make sure nothing has punctured your dog’s pads. Better still is to have your dog wear a very lightweight, breathable dog boot made with a heat resistant sole to protect your dog’s paws from hot surfaces like sidewalks & sand in the summer. These boots can also protect your dog’s paws from bee stings, ticks, chemicals, germs, or anything else abrasive or irritating that your dog might step on.
